Job Summary

The Mechanic I is responsible for assisting the Technology and Automation Manager in the overall operation and maintenance of the company’s scientific instrumentation and equipment. This includes but is not limited to: HPLC, UPLC, GC, SFC, various process equipment, various process analytical equipment, and kilo lab production equipment.

Must be able to perform routine maintenance and repairs with minimal oversight, assisting the Technology and Automation Manager with non-routine maintenance and repairs, and assist or take ownership of a variety of in-house projects with both Facilities and Technology as needed.

Candidates must be enthusiastically driven to learn, both by learning from others and by teaching him or herself. He or she will be comfortable with hand and power tool usage and have strong problem-solving skills. Must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team.

Principal Duties
Perform unguided routine maintenance on scientific instrumentation (Level 1)

With minimal guidance, diagnose routine instrumentation problems (Level 2), determine best course of action, and execute repairs, including:
Simple flow path repairs
Documented HPLC/GC repairs
Mechanical stirring repairs, etc.

Assist in non-routine problems and simple repairs (Level 3), and perform assigned non-routine repair actions with minimal guidance, including:
Complex flow-path repairs
Partial teardowns
Simple electrical/electronic/controls repairs
Non-documented simple HPLC/GC repairs
Documented SFC repairs, etc.

Assist in non-routine undocumented problems and complex repairs (Level 4) including:
Complete teardowns
Complex electrical/electronic/controls problems
Non-documented complex HPLC/GC repairs
Non-documented SFC repairs, etc.

Design and manufacture in-house solutions as needed, including:
Fabrication
Soldering/braising/welding
CAD (computer-aided drafting and design)
3D printing, etc.

Assist facilities team with in-house solutions as needed, including:
Ventilated cabinets
Hanging/mounting equipment
Assembly and installation of equipment


Perform regular duties as assigned, including:
Overseeing usage and upkeep of general lab equipment
Upkeep of workshop
Refilling of workshop containers
Handling and organized placement of new incoming parts, etc.

Job Qualifications
Relevant experience with general scientific instrumentation (preferred), or general diagnosis and repair.

AS degree in Engineering, Chemistry, or relevant field is a plus.

Demonstrated successful track record of capability, including ability to be self-guided, performing routine duties with minimal supervision.

Capable of demonstrating a successful track record of supporting the initiation, evaluation, introduction and completion of proper equipment maintenance.
